Local Committee President's Address
Dear colleagues and friends,
It is our great pleasure to welcome you to Toledo and to the XVII International Congress of Pediatric Pulmonology (CIPP).
The “Imperial City” of Toledo is a unique historic city, perfectly suited to hold our unique CIPP, the only international congress fully devoted to pediatric respiratory medicine. Less than 100 km from Madrid-Barajas International Airport, Toledo has easy and convenient access by high speed train from Madrid. Visited by thousands of tourists each day, Toledo has a large and exquisite tourist industry offering a variety of hotels, restaurants, bares and mesones appropriate for every budget where your visit will be more than a pleasure.
The El Greco Congress Palace is located in the very heart of the Historic City of Toledo, a world heritage site since 1986, only a few steps from Arabic horseshoe-arched mosques, Sephardic synagogues and one of Spain’s finest Gothic cathedrals. In the middle ages, Toledo was known as the ‘City of the Three Cultures’, a place where – legend has it – Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities peacefully coexisted. There are even deeper layers: Toledo was the capital of the Visigothic kingdom and even before, an important Roman city built upon the previous Celtic tribe’s town. All those remains are crammed into its dense historical core and easily accessible from the Congress venue.
Impressive during the day, its beauty can be fully admired at sunset at Hermita del Valle, where you will enjoy a full view of the historic city. At night, Toledo reaches its highest value, taking you back to older times. Walking through its ancient streets, listening to your own steps, is a wonderful feeling not to be missed.
If you love art, the haunting canvases of El Greco, the influential, impossible-to-classify painter with whom the city is synonymous, are waiting for you at Santo Tome’s Church, The Cathedral and several other places.
History and art are not the only qualities that flourish in Toledo. Our National Spanish Health System, a universal tax-supported health system run by seventeen different regional authorities, provides health indicators which rank in the world’s top five with lower health expenditure than most industrialized countries, especially in pediatrics. Just ask, if you are interested.
As you can see, an outstanding scientific program mixed with a marvelous historic city is waiting for you in Toledo. We are looking forward to meeting you here in June 2018.
Thank you very much for coming.
